Mesa State College is a public college with a liberal arts focus in Grand Junction, which is the largest city in western Colorado state, USA, as well as the county seat and the most populous city in Mesa County, having a population estimated at a number of more than 53 500 inhabitants, during the 2007 census. Grand Junction is also of the Grand Junction Metropolitan Statistical Area, which had approximately 146 000 people, living within its limits, in 2009.
Mesa State College was established in 1925, as Grand Junction Junior College, first starting with an enrollment of only 39 students. In 1937, the institution's name was changed to Mesa College, in 1974 the college becoming authorized to offer baccalaureate degrees, 20 years later becoming authorized to also offer graduate degree programs.
Mesa State currently has an enrollment of more than 7000 students, and grants two-year associates degrees, four-year bachelors degrees, and masters degrees in business administration and education, offering programs leading to awards in four levels - technical certificates, associate degrees, baccalaureate degrees, and master's degrees.
The college's athletic teams are known as the Mesa State Mavericks which compete in 19 varsity sports, for men and women, in NCAA Division II athletics, in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. Their distinctive colors are maroon and white.
